What began with defeat to Poland has become a historic journey for Nigeria’s Flamingos.
Awawu Bashiru scored twice as Nigeria defeated Brazil 3–1 on Wednesday to reach the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final for the first time, offering a welcome moment of joy in a difficult year for Nigerian football.
After a goalless first half, Queen Joseph broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, assisted by Oluwakemi Adegbuyi.
Joseph then provided the assist for Bashiru to double Nigeria’s advantage in the 71st minute. Bashiru added her second nine minutes later, with Oluebube Umejiaku supplying the assist, putting the Flamingos firmly in control.
Greise Kelly pulled one back for Brazil in the 89th minute, but it was too late to threaten Nigeria’s historic victory.
From setback to silverware
The Flamingos opened their campaign with a 2–1 defeat to Poland. Their response has been five successive victories, overcoming Puerto Rico, defending champions DPR Korea, Mexico, Venezuela and now Brazil.
They have surpassed their previous best finish of third place in 2022 and are now guaranteed at least silver, with a chance to claim the title.
A reason to believe
For Nigerian supporters, this run offers relief after a bruising period. The Super Eagles missed the 2026 World Cup, while the Super Falcons failed to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup for the first time.
The Flamingos cannot erase those disappointments, but they have given the country something to celebrate.
A campaign that began with defeat will end with Nigeria playing for a world title.
